MTV Unplugged Presents “A Hip-Hop 50th Celebration of Jersey’s Finest” Featuring Iconic Performers

Jersey Takes Center Stage with Queen Latifah, Wyclef Jean, and Treach Headlining MTV Unplugged Celebration

Jersey City, NJ – [Dec. 14-2023]

Get ready for a legendary night as MTV Unplugged proudly presents “A Hip-Hop 50th Celebration of Jersey’s Finest,” featuring an all-star lineup of iconic performers. The star-studded event, set to air at 9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14, on MTV, promises an unforgettable showcase of New Jersey’s significant contributions to the hip-hop genre.

The powerhouse lineup includes Queen Latifah, Wyclef Jean, and Treach from Naughty by Nature, who will grace the stage alongside Redman, Poor Righteous Teachers, Heather B, the Sugarhill Gang, Lady Luck, and Lords of the Underground. The electric performances were recorded in November at Newark Symphony Hall on Broad Street, capturing the essence of Jersey’s hip-hop culture.

Renowned actress, rapper, and producer Queen Latifah spearheads the event as its producer, while Emmy-winner Adam Blackstone, a Trenton native, takes on the role of musical director, ensuring an unparalleled musical experience. The celebration will also air at 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, on BET, and at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, on VH1, allowing fans multiple opportunities to relive this historic celebration.

Hip-hop enthusiasts will be treated to a journey through the genre’s roots, with New Jersey boasting one of its earliest hits – “Rapper’s Delight” by the Sugarhill Gang, released by Englewood’s Sugar Hill Records in 1979. The state’s rich hip-hop history aligns seamlessly with the broader narrative of the genre, dating back to DJ Kool Herc’s groundbreaking performance on Aug. 11, 1973, at a Bronx community center, marking the birth of hip-hop culture.

This special celebration follows the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards, where Fetty Wap, Naughty By Nature, Queen Latifah, Redman, and Wyclef Jean paid tribute to Jersey hip-hop at the Prudential Center in Newark. The upcoming MTV Unplugged event promises to be a continuation of this homage, showcasing the enduring impact and influence of Jersey’s hip-hop scene.

Before the much-anticipated MTV celebration, fans can indulge in the nostalgia of the “Gym, Tan, Rewind: Jersey Shore Watchback,” featuring cast members of “Jersey Shore,” airing at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14.
